Although I have been able to experiment with WordPress and Divi prior to going remote, this experience was definitely much more impactful than my previous time learning WordPress and Divi. Prior to building this site, I only really applied my skills to experimental sites, which would end up eventually disappearing. Building this site allowed me to apply these skills to a real-life situation where I was able to work towards a goal and create something that would eventually be used in the real world. By being able to learn WordPress and Divi, this has further enhanced my ability to engage in web development. Web development was something that I was always interested in but never fully pursued due to my hesitation that I had the capability to learn something that seemed so complex. Web development is such an important skill to have in today’s day and age, and being able to not only learn WordPress but also learn Divi, was beyond helpful and impactful. This showed me that you don’t actually need to know how to code in order to build a website. Prior to being introduced to the power of WordPress and Divi, I had a firm knowledge that the main way you could build a website was by having to code with Javascript. But indeed, this is not the case and the technology revolving around web development has certainly become more user friendly. WordPress and Divi are both powerful tools and I believe that they should be utilized so much more in the world due to how easy they are to use! Overall, my takeaway from this digital project site construction is that you simply don’t need to know how to code to create a website! There are plenty of different platforms aside from WordPress and Divi that can allow for easy website building, and a fair amount of these platforms are even offered free of charge to students at the University of Oregon. I will eternally cherish the opportunity I had to be able to learn how to build a WordPress website while going through a pandemic and the immense amount of support and resources I have received for this project, especially during such a large pandemic and some of the roughest months I have ever experienced.
Sabrina’s Takeaway From This Term’s Work
A major takeaway from this term’s work that I plan to apply to my daily practice as a UO student is the fact that you can make the best out of any scenario and can always find ways to keep on learning when resources are limited. When it was first announced that Spring term would be changed to a remote setting due to COVID-19, I was prepared for unemployment and a less productive term than my other terms at the University of Oregon, however, I was proven wrong. When I was notified that I would still be able to hold my lab assistant job, something that would usually require in-person attendance, I was quite skeptical, until the DREAM Lab management team notified us that not only would we be working remotely, but we would be learning something that could eventually impact our lives in the long run.
